Building a Big Society for all Ages
Today’s Older people are becoming increasingly more aware of just how powerful their voices can be and that they now have to be listened to by politicians.
The power they now hold through the ballot box has never been so strong. For the first time in history of this country there will soon be more older people than young people, and as the countries economy becomes increasingly more dependant on the huge contribution that older people make to society.This to be more formally recognised, through real the engagement and participation of all Older People in the Big Society Strategies now being formulated by the Government.
Thurrock Over Fifties Forum hosted the Eastern Region Older Peoples Advisory Group Annual Conference at the Civic Hall Grays on November 18th.2010
Older people forum delegates from all over the East of England attended the daylong conference.
The conference theme was ‘Building a Big Society for all Ages’
The Statuary authorities strategic planning and service delivery will be at the forefront of meeting the challenges created by planned budget cuts.Solutions can only be achieved by fully engaging with older people.
Working in partnerships is the key to achieving the aims of ‘Building a Society for all Ages’,and realising the Big Society vision..
Speakers from a range of organisations talked on how to increase knowledge and awareness of these agendas and other issues affecting all older people and will highlight best practice in empowering and involving older people in decision-making.
Delegates were also be able to visit show stands, focusing on older peoples services and opportunities for involvement in the Big society. Older people were also be able to Speak up for their Age under the banner of ‘Nothing about us without Us’,
Information ,entertainment and lunch ensured that the day was an interesting and enjoyable one The event was free to the over fifties.
